What will Azure offer? 

Azure will deploy a physical extension of Microsoft Azure’s regional infrastructure, designed to bring cloud services closer to users and support data residency. While the control plane remains within a main Azure region (e.g., West Europe), the data plane is hosted locally—in this case, within Luxembourg.

• Local hosting of virtual machines (VMs), containers (AKS), storage (Blob, Disks), and more; 
• Low latency for critical workloads; 
• Architecture designed to support data residency for compliance with European and Luxembourgish regulations; 
• Consistent integration with the global Azure ecosystem. 

This setup helps businesses and public institutions enjoy the scalability and innovation of the cloud, without compromising on compliance or performance. 

Service overview: 

• Azure Data Center in a metro location 
• Location: Microsoft managed facility 
• Connectivity: Full back-end connectivity to Microsoft global network 
• Connected to Azure Region: Runs integrated with control plane in Azure Regions 
• Consistent Azure Experience: HW, APIs, tools, and management controls as Azure 
• Services: Subset of Azure services catering to low latency workloads: VM, VMSS, Storage Accounts, AKS, vNet, Load Balancer, Private Link, Azure Site recovery, Azure Backup, among others
• Tenancy: Multi-tenant offering 
• Consumption Model: Pay-as-you-go (consistent with Azure in general) 

In the Azure Region:

the Control plane remains at regional level, where the Portal, ARM, Resource Providers run in the region, and where Operations remains at regional level.

In the Luxembourg location:

the Azure compute and storage racks are deployed to an extended DC instead of the Region DC. These compute and storage primitives are the building blocks Azure services deploy on – except where specialized hardware is required.
