Tango and Proximus NXT Obtain the Frequencies Required to Launch Their 5G Network
Bertrange, July 22, 2020 – Following the auction organized by the ILR, Tango and Proximus NXT are proud to announce that they have secured the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz frequency bands. This milestone marks a key step toward the upcoming launch of their 5G network.
The process was lengthy and highly anticipated. After a comprehensive procedure involving detailed applications and competitive bidding, the ILR awarded Proximus Luxembourg, through its commercial brands Tango and Proximus NXT, frequency blocks in the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz bands for the development of its own 5G network. This decision represents a major milestone in the operator’s mobile journey, which began several years ago.
Following the first 5G test in Luxembourg in 2019, Tango and Proximus NXT are proud to fully contribute to this technological revolution.
“Whether under the Tango or Proximus NXT brand, we are committed to supporting our customers in this new technology and providing them with the best possible infrastructure to develop their activities and enrich their daily lives. This development is also essential for the country and its competitiveness. We are therefore very proud to have obtained these new frequencies and are preparing for the next step, with the ambition of launching our 5G solutions by the end of the year,” says Gérard Hoffmann, CEO of Proximus Luxembourg.
More Than an Improvement, 5G Is a Necessity
This is not simply about increasing speeds, even though that is part of the equation. Mobile network traffic is doubling every two years, and without this investment, current network capacity will soon be reached. These developments must be implemented now. 5G is therefore inevitable if we want to continue delivering today’s applications with the same level of quality while keeping up with traffic growth.
Opening the Door to New Usage Models
Beyond speed and capacity, the arrival of 5G will bring new possibilities that will fundamentally transform the way we communicate and enable the emergence of new use cases: communication, healthcare, smart cities, Industry 4.0… all sectors will benefit from this advancement.
For example, it will enable greater interaction through the widespread adoption of augmented reality and more immersive experiences. 5G will also revolutionize the way connected objects are designed by introducing extremely low latency and real-time capabilities.
The 5G revolution will also impact enterprises and the way they design their communications. Thanks to network slicing, 5G will allow the creation of virtual private mobile networks within the public network. A company will be able to assign specific characteristics to its own “slice” of the network, such as customized security levels and priority management.
Preparing the Future of Networks
Securing frequency blocks in the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz bands was therefore essential to begin preparing the future of networks and the many possibilities it offers. Technical teams will now be able to continue deployment and optimize existing infrastructure in order to fully leverage this new standard, ensuring excellent nationwide coverage as well as speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
The only remaining step will be to obtain the necessary “Commodo-Incommodo” permits to activate the sites in the field and launch new customer offerings.
