PayPal: Where Convenience Meets Security

For more than twenty years, PayPal has been providing an alternative to traditional payment methods. Since its early days as a platform primarily associated with eBay purchases, the company has grown significantly, expanding into hundreds of markets worldwide and serving millions of active customers.

We spoke with Frank Keller, Vice President of PayPal for Europe and Global Inside Sales, to gain his perspective on the future of the global payments landscape.

As the payments ecosystem continues to evolve, customer experience has become a key competitive differentiator. How do you design new payment experiences?

"At PayPal, we take a customer-centric approach to designing and delivering new products. Our product development process is iterative and always begins by identifying customer pain points. We continuously engage with both existing and prospective customers to better understand their behaviors, preferences, and challenges.

Once we've identified a customer problem, we focus on finding the right solution. We rely on open-stack shared services that are easy to integrate, reusable across multiple use cases, and globally compatible. Our product philosophy is to design globally and optimize locally, allowing us to launch solutions simultaneously across multiple markets.

A great example of this approach is the rollout of our QR code payment solution across 28 markets worldwide. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing demand for contactless commerce, we introduced QR code functionality within the PayPal app. It enables consumers and merchants to complete secure, in-person transactions without handling cash."

An American Express study shows that while merchants are looking to strengthen payment security, consumers want faster checkout experiences across all payment channels, including online transactions. How do you reconcile convenience and security?

"Security is PayPal's highest priority. We power the digital commerce ecosystem around the world, and we continuously invest in protecting our consumers, merchants, and employees.

Every day, we process more than 33 million transactions and approximately USD 22,000 in payments every second. This gives us valuable insights into spending habits, behavioral patterns, location data, and much more.

We use this information privately to verify customer identities behind the scenes, eliminating the need for users to authenticate themselves during every transaction. As a result, our customers benefit from both strong security and faster checkout experiences.

Data bridges the gap between speed and security. During a transaction that lasts just two seconds, PayPal performs hundreds—sometimes thousands—of risk assessments."

While much attention has been given to Millennials, Generation Z is becoming an increasingly influential consumer segment. Born between 1995 and 2015, they now represent around 24% of the world's population and are expected to command significant purchasing power. How is PayPal engaging this generation?

"Many of the mobile and app-based services used daily by younger generations—such as food delivery, public transportation tickets, and music streaming—depend on secure online payments. Being available as a payment option within these new digital experiences significantly increases our visibility among younger consumers.

Our peer-to-peer payment services have also proven particularly attractive to digital natives across Europe. The ability to send money instantly to friends and family has helped us both acquire new customers and strengthen long-term engagement.

From a marketing perspective, we focus on delivering products and experiences that genuinely resonate with Generation Z while communicating through the channels they naturally use and trust."

Has the COVID-19 crisis accelerated the decline of cash? Which payment methods are best positioned to replace it?

"The pandemic has fundamentally reshaped consumer behavior in three major ways.

First, it has accelerated the long-term shift from physical to digital interactions. Digital payments were already gaining momentum, but the current environment has significantly accelerated that transition.

Second, retail has rapidly moved online. COVID-19 compressed what would likely have been two to five years of e-commerce growth into a much shorter period.

Third, digital payments have evolved from being a convenience to becoming a necessity. We are fortunate to be in a position where we can help merchants move their businesses online while enabling consumers to make secure digital payments.

As both businesses and consumers continue embracing digital commerce, our customer base has grown to more than 325 million active users. Average daily engagement has increased by well over 20%, and newly acquired customer cohorts are approximately 30% more engaged than previous ones.

We believe this trend will continue. Digital payments—whether online or in-store—will remain an integral part of everyday life long after pandemic-related restrictions have disappeared.

Consumers increasingly prefer not to handle cash, touch payment terminals, or use shared pens when making purchases. In response to this demand for safe, contactless experiences, we introduced QR code payments within the PayPal app, allowing consumers and merchants to complete face-to-face transactions from a safe distance. We expect contactless payment solutions like these to become increasingly common among retailers of every size."
