Tango and Proximus NXT secure the frequencies required to launch their 5G network.
The process was lengthy and the outcome highly anticipated. Following a comprehensive process involving detailed applications and an auction, the ILR awarded Proximus Luxembourg, under its Tango and Proximus NXT brands, frequencies in the 700 MHz and 3600 MHz bands to develop its own 5G network. This decision represents a key milestone in the company’s journey as a mobile operator, which began several years ago.
Having carried out the first 5G test in Luxembourg in 2019, Tango and Proximus NXT are proud to play a full role in this technological revolution. “Whether through Tango or Proximus NXT, we are committed to supporting our customers in embracing this new technology and providing them with the best possible infrastructure to develop their businesses and enhance their everyday lives. This development is also essential for the country and its competitiveness. We are therefore extremely proud to have secured these new frequencies and are preparing for the next stage, with the ambition of launching our 5G solutions by the end of the year,” explains Gérard Hoffmann, CEO of Proximus Luxembourg.
More than an improvement, 5G is a necessity
This is not simply about increasing speeds, although that is certainly an important part of the equation. Mobile network traffic doubles every two years, meaning that without this investment, the capacity of existing networks will soon be reached. The time to implement these developments is now. 5G is therefore essential if we want to continue providing today’s applications with the same level of quality while keeping pace with the growth in traffic.
Une ouverture sur de nouveaux modèles d’utilisation
Au-delà de la vitesse et de la capacité, l’arrivée de la 5G apportera surtout des possibilités telles, qu’elle révolutionnera la façon de communiquer et permettra l’éclosion de nouveaux modèles d’utilisation : communication, médecine, ville intelligente, industrie 4.0… tous les secteurs d’activités bénéficieront de cette avancée. C’est, par exemple, une porte vers plus d’interactions avec la généralisation de la réalité augmentée et des expériences plus immersives. La 5G va également révolutionner la façon de concevoir les objets connectés en apportant une notion de temps réel extrêmement importante.
La révolution 5G touchera aussi les entreprises et leur façon de concevoir leurs communications. Car La 5G va permettre, grâce au network slicing, de configurer des réseaux mobiles privés virtuels à l’intérieur du réseau public. Une entreprise pourra alors associer à sa propre « tranche » de réseau des caractéristiques particulières, telles que des niveaux de sécurité et de priorité sur-mesure.
L’obtention de blocs de fréquences dans les bandes 700 MHz et 3600 MHz était donc primordiale pour commencer dès aujourd’hui à préparer le futur des réseaux ainsi que toutes les possibilités qu’il offre. Les équipes techniques vont pouvoir poursuivre le déploiement et optimiser les infrastructures en place afin d’obtenir le meilleur de ce que ce nouveau standard peut permettre, le tout en assurant une très belle couverture du territoire en plus de débit pouvant aller jusqu’à 1 Gbps. Il ne restera alors plus qu’à obtenir les autorisations « Commodo-Incommodo » pour activer les sites sur le terrain et proposer de nouvelles offres aux clients.
