3G network out of service

Since its launch in 2020, Tango has seen 5G data traffic grow exponentially. In 2022 alone, the volume increased tenfold, in line with the evolution of smartphones, their content and the services they offer. Conversely, the 3G network (launched in 2003) has experienced a steady decline in traffic for several years and, consequently, a reduction in capacity requirements. Over time and as technology has evolved, 3G has become obsolete, now accounting for less than one percent of total traffic.

To ensure efficient use of the mobile spectrum, Tango and Proximus NXT have chosen to reallocate the frequencies assigned to 3G services to 5G. In a context increasingly focused on energy efficiency and where demand for the latest technologies continues to grow, having a mobile network that delivers better performance in terms of security and energy consumption is a key consideration. This transition will go hand in hand with an accelerated 5G rollout, with nationwide coverage expected during 2023.

What will this change mean for consumers?

In Luxembourg, almost all consumers already own a device that supports at least 4G. For them, the shutdown of 3G will have absolutely no impact, and their mobile experience will remain unchanged—or even improve if they own a 5G-enabled device. Although increasingly rare, customers who still have an older 3G device do not need to worry. They will still be able to make calls and send SMS messages, as these services are fully supported by the 2G network. Since data traffic on 3G devices used by residential customers is virtually non-existent and is primarily generated by devices that already support 4G, the impact will be very limited.
